A Driver’s Seat View On The Beauty of Singapore

Written on September 16, 2012 at 8:19 PM, by

I have been living here in Singapore for quite some time. Life has been good to me in this country, I work for a prestigious company and I have a beautiful home, which my family and I truly love. All thanks to my dedication and hardwork, I have obtained most of my dreams and aspirations as I thrive in this country. Now, I am about to buy my very first car. I had this traumatic accident when I was still young so I was hesitant at first in getting a car.

Me and my father were involved in a car accident when he took me home from school so from that day forward, I had this fear of driving because of that experience. It took some time to shake my fears away but now I finally mustered the strength to face the very thing that has scared me all my life.

Now I will be able to enjoy Singapore more and see its wonders right on my car’s driving seat.

Five of the Best Road Trip Stops

Written on September 7, 2012 at 11:00 PM, by

Going on a road trip is fun and exciting because you never know what’s waiting for you. Of course, you have to have a map or an itinerary; but you never really know what to expect when you get to your destination. It can be quite tiring, but you can always stopover and rest somewhere. To make your road trip more interesting, why not make your stops a part of your itinerary?

To help you plan out your road trip, here are the five most interesting places where you can stop, relax and do all that you want to before getting back on the road.

If you’re on a road trip with the whole family, you will want to make a pit stop over at the Tamarack Tourist Information Center. You’ll find this pit stop at the West Virginia Turnpike or I-77, specifically at exit 45. Aside from good food and live music, you and your family will love to experience movie viewing in the 178-seat theater. There are also theater shows and storytelling sessions. Best of all, you’ll love the structure’s drive-in like design, specifically its crowned roof.

If your road trip takes you from Madison to Minneapolis, you should make a stop at the House on the Rock. Built by Alex Jordan, the house stands in what was once just a 60-foot rock. As people stopped to marvel at his masterpiece day in and day out, Jordan decided to open his house to the public. Today, the House on the Rock is a favorite American pit stop. You’ll love the food served in the restaurant. You and your road trip gang can also choose to stay the night in the inn.

When traveling from New York to New York City, you and your road trip gang might want to check out Mars 2112, a futuristic pit stop right in the heart of the world famous Times Square District. It’s the best stop for travelers who have always (secretly) longed for a trip to Mars. Its architecture embodies everything that Mars is. The place may be weird for some, but it definitely is an interesting and intriguing pit stop!

For those who believe in such things as the fountain of life and the fountain of youth, driving down to the eastern Florida coast is the best option. There, travelers make a stop for a place known as the Fountain of Youth. Whether you believe in it or not, it makes for an interesting pit stop for who would not want to see something that claims to be the answer to eternal youthfulness?

Finally, if you’re a fan of anything unusual or extraordinary, you will want to head on over to Dateline Café, which is found in between Yuma and Phoenix, Arizona. While the café is not a Guinness-record holder, it does serve shakes that are made from homegrown dates and thirst quenching cactus shakes.

Check out these pit stops on your next road trip!

A Birthday Party My Daughter Will Never Forget

Written on August 29, 2012 at 6:11 PM, by

I want to have the best birthday party for my daughter. It is just a few days away and will be held in our frontyard. Actually I have nothing to worry about anymore since I have already contacted the catering company, secured the inflatable playhouse I borrowed from my friend, and the balloons and the decorations are pretty much covered. The only concern I have was the games I have to prepare for Lisa, my lovely 8-year old daughter.

Good thing my sister suggested a game that Lisa and the guests would surely love and enjoy. This game is called Scavenger Hunt. All I need to do now is to come up with a list of things Lisa and the invitees should search as indicated in the scavenger hunt clues I am going to make. I believe they will find the game fun and exciting as they have to scour for these objects and race up who completes the list first.

All I want is to give my daughter the best birthday possible for her and her guests and in just a matter of days, that wish will become a reality, thanks to my wife, sister and my friends who helped me come up with activities and games for Lisa’s birthday.

Top Five Reasons Why People Should Engage In More Outdoor Activities

Written on August 19, 2012 at 4:50 AM, by

We live in an age where computers have become an integral part of life. We use the computer to complete our office tasks. We depend on the computer when we want to learn about something new. We use the computer to help us find people, locate places and even identify certain objects. Sometimes, we even use the computer to help us solve problems!

Sadly, because of the computer’s vast popularity in practically every corner of the world, many are now becoming more and more content with just staying at home. At home, they can play all the computer games they want without anyone bothering them. They can eat all the (junk) food they want while playing, without anybody reprimanding them. Gone are the days when you would see children – or any group of people, for that matter – playing and having fun outside. This is why obesity is now a global problem. This is why more and more people are having problems with their health.

If you know somebody who would rather spend the whole day inside the house playing with the computer or his Xbox, or Wii, or any other gaming device, enumerate these reasons why people should do more outdoor activities and he might just listen and understand.

The most obvious benefit of outdoor activities is all the good that it for our body; for our health. Recreational activities like sports and cardiovascular and aerobic exercises are all physical activities that can be done outdoors. Regularly engaging in these activities will help improve a person’s immune system. Therefore, he becomes stronger and healthier.

Regularly engaging in outdoor recreational activities is good for the mind. The psychological benefits of outdoor recreation include stress reduction, increase in confidence and self-esteem, development and improvement of creativity, and improved general well-being. People who are physically active are also happy and positive individuals.

The third benefit of regularly doing outdoor activities is improvement of one’s social life. People who spend hours upon hours playing computer games have the tendency to become reclusive. Therefore, they do not develop good social skills and do not have a social life. Regular outdoor and physical activity involvement allows one to stay connected with people and to meet new people with whom he can share interests and ideas with.

A person who regularly engages in outdoor recreational activities is generally environmentally aware. He knows how to value nature.

Finally, constant involvement in outdoor activities can improve a person’s passion for and level of productivity. Since he is generally active, happy and has a positive outlook, it is easy for him to find earning opportunities. It is easy for him to find success.

Accessing Windows Programs From Mac

Written on August 2, 2012 at 1:37 PM, by

A lot of people have been using Windows for a long time, but have suddenly found themselves buying a Mac and loving features that only Apple can offer. In fact, many of those who switched from regular PCs to Macs swear they would be Mac users for the rest of their lives. This is understandable, because a Mac is in many ways superior to most personal computers that run on Windows. However, many people realize that while they’re enjoying their Mac experience, they could not help but think about those software and applications that they really liked on Windows. Of course, Windows and its apps are not available for the Mac OS.

However, products like the Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac make this problem moot and academic. That’s because this software, which can be purchase at a discount from Parallels.com, makes it possible for Mac users to access Windows and its programs. And since this operating system is virtualized, there’s no need to download the entire system on your Mac. Just run Parallels Desktop 7, and you can enjoy all those Windows features on your Mac.

Technology has indeed made our lives easier, and this will always be the case in perpetuity.

An Introduction to the Sports of Kayak or Kayaking

Written on July 28, 2012 at 10:56 AM, by

Kayaking, which uses a kayak for moving across bodies of water, is one of the more popular outdoor activities among people of varying age groups. Water sports lovers, in particular, have been taking their kayaks out and paddling in different waterways. A lot of people, though, especially those who are not into sports or outdoor recreation, still have no concrete idea what kayaking is all about.

The sports of kayak or kayaking dates back to the early 1900s, when the first kayak; a folding kayak; was made in 1905. This kayak traveled mainly in lakes and rivers, but some years later, another type of kayak was built, this time for use in the ocean. Fifty years after the first kayak was created, the fiberglass kayak was introduced. Today, there are different types of kayaks, and the sport of kayaking has become more popular, more competitive and more exciting.

People who kayak can choose the kind of water adventure that they want. Sea kayaking is also known as touring and is best for people who want to go and explore the ocean and a lake. Whitewater kayaking is for those who want a rougher adventure. The kayak goes through rapids and waterfalls.

There are also polo kayaks, surf kayaks, racing kayaks, slalom kayaks, day tripping kayaks and expedition kayaks.

Kayaks can also be classified according to their material and design. As mentioned earlier, there fiberglass kayaks. There are also kayaks made out of wood, metal, fabrics and plastic. One type that has steadily become popular is the inflatable kayak. Inflatable kayaks are preferred by kayakers who travel a lot as these kayaks can be easily deflated and stored. In addition, they are also easy to clean as they dry up fast.

Kayaking can be a truly fascinating experience, especially if you love gliding in the water. At times it can be exhilarating, although it is often described as a calming and relaxing activity. It may look and sound like something quite easy to do, but it really is not. Just like many other outdoor sports, proper training is required before one can hop on a kayak and glide across waters.

The usual kayak training process starts with the beginner’s level, which normally takes place inside a classroom for the first few days. Common lessons discussed include safety and proper handling of the kayak and paddles, swimming basics, and the importance of life jackets. After the beginner’s or basic level, a newbie kayaker is then slowly introduced into the techniques of kayaking and the class moves into the open waters.

If you are looking for a good outdoor recreational activity, now will be the best time to start learning how to kayak. Aside from giving you enough of the physical activity you need, you’ll also learn how to be relaxed and calm. The perfect way to de-stress.

Tips on How You Can Save Money During A Long Road Trip

Written on July 24, 2012 at 10:58 PM, by

A road trip can be a fun and memorable adventure, especially if you go with family and friends. However, as road trips can often take days, it can also cause a drain in finances. There are tips, though, that you can follow if you want to save on your expenses and push through with your road trip.

One of the advantages of going on a road trip with a large group of family or friends is the fact that you can pitch in with the expenses. This means that you will not need to shoulder all the expenses by yourself. You can divide the expenses for gas, lodging and food among yourselves.

Days before your road trip, map out your plan or itinerary. Although there is a possibility that you won’t be able to follow the itinerary step-by-step, having a plan is better than having no idea at all about what to do or where to go. With a concrete plan or itinerary, you will be able to avoid extra and unnecessary expenses. Do not forget to bring road maps with you as this will help you know which direction you should take. Driving around with no proper destination will definitely mean more expenses.

Pack a lot of food and water so you will not have to eat in restaurants. If you have a cooler, bring it with you so you can keep your food and water properly stored.

If you need to make stopovers in certain places, be sure to check out hotels and inns way ahead of your trip. There are a lot of hotels that have discount extended stay offers for those who intend to stay for more than one or two days. If you need a place for overnight stay only, you can always look for affordable inns and motels.

Hotels or inns that are not that full usually offer lower rates. If a hotel or inn’s parking space is almost empty, there’s a big possibility that you will be able to save on your accommodation expenses if you choose to stay there. Hotels and inns will do all that they can to get as many customers as possible.

Finally, before you leave for your trip, check your vehicle inside and out. Make sure your tires are in perfect condition. Bring extra tires. If you run out of gas, look for truck stops with gasoline service stations as they usually have really cheap rates. The best way to save on gasoline expenses, however, is to bring extra gas.

If you follow these tips, your road trip will definitely be something for the books; something that will stay in your memory bank for many years.

Things You Need to Do and Have When Going On A Backpacking Adventure

Written on July 20, 2012 at 3:54 PM, by

If you are planning to go on a backpacking adventure, you need to be prepared. It is important to get all the important stuff ready way before you go on your adventure. A backpacking adventure is not something that you can do in a matter of hours. Normally, you go backpacking for one or two days, or over the weekend. This is why you need to plan things ahead of time.

The first thing that you need to do is prepare all the essential backpacking stuff. One of the most important things you should have with you is a sturdy backpack. It should be one that is meant specifically for rough conditions, not the cutesy ones that come in colors like pink and violet! A good adventure backpack is one that provides the right comfort and support without sacrificing quality. The straps should be sturdy; it should have padding and the right curves. This is essential if you want to keep your shoulders and collarbone safe all throughout your journey. Better yet, try to find a good waterproof backpack.

Waterproof backpacks are good for rough conditions because they can provide protection and comfort even when it rains. Your stuff will be kept safe and dry. A lot of these backpacks are made of the best materials. They also come with features that backpackers need; like waist straps, large zippers and paddings. They may cost a bit more than the regular backpacks, but when you go for an adventure, you should never compromise on quality because your safety and comfort will be on the line.

Once you have chosen a good waterproof backpack, you should then move on to gathering all the essentials that you need to put inside the bag. A good supply of water, a medicine or first aid kit, some easy-to-carry and ready-to-eat food, extra clothing, extra pair of shoes, a sleeping bag and tent (if needed), and flashlight with extra batteries. You may need to bring more stuff, but it all depends on where you are going and how long you will be out on that adventure.

Finally, days before your big adventure, try to learn as much as you can about the place or places that you will be going to. Remember, knowing is one way of keeping safe. Also, it will make you a bit familiar not only with the places, but with the people you will be meeting, too. This will give you an idea of how to approach them or how to interact with them if ever the need arises.

If you prepare for your backpacking adventure ahead of time, there is no doubt that you will have an experience that you will never forget!

This is the selection of today with some reflections.

1. Fix You, Coldplay
Summer of 2005
Writing thesis and solutions to a PhD course in Salabacke, Uppsala, the offsite trip to Asilomar, and the nightly walks during the same offsite. Sitting outside the reception taking pictures of a foot and looking at the stars…

2. Living Room, David Gray
Late December 2004 – January 2005
Staffan, love you, man. The beer nights at Katalin, Uppsala, with lots of Kilkenny, laughs and our “strange” discussions.

3. 20,000 Seconds, K’Choice
September 2001, Montpellier, France
Sitting on a plan with a “sad” mind from France back to Sweden thinking of the smell of Dolce & Gabbana perfume, crazy French drivers and the extremely loud bells of the Cathedral outside.

4. You Oughta Know, Alanis Morissette

Sitting as fire watch during the nights in the field somewhere in Sweden with one earplug, the other constantly listening to “surprise attacks”. Eating my homemade buns.

Instruments Usually Found in A Portugese Orchestra

Written on July 8, 2012 at 7:18 AM, by

Orchestras are fascinating to watch and listen to. Different instruments join together to create a distinct sound and melody. Looking at the musicians who work with all these instruments is also interesting because you get to see different expressions. You also cannot stop but marvel at how talented one has to be to create beautiful music like them.

There are many orchestras in the world. Basically every country has its own orchestra, playing not only for their people but also for people from other parts of the world who love good music. All these orchestras work together to create beautiful stories through the music and melodies that they create. The only difference, basically, is that not all orchestras use the same instruments. Some orchestras add in a couple of instruments, especially those that are considered native to their country. A Portugese orchestra is the perfect example for this.

To give you an idea of what instruments are played in a Portugese orchestra, here is a list of some unique instruments that the members play.

The Sarronca creates a distinct sound when a stick is rubbed against its skin. The skin of this instrument is stretched over its resonance box, which is in the form of a jug, or can; or any hollow container. This instrument is described as a friction or rubbed membranophone.

To create a distinct deep and low sound, the orchestra uses the Bombo, a large bass drum. Only one side of the drum’s skin is hit by the musician and the instrument is played vertically.

The third membranophone in a Portugese orchestra is the Adufe or traditional square tambourine. Its origins can be traced back to the Moors. This instrument is almost always made of pine. A goat’s skin is mounted on the pine and stitched on the sides. It is played by the playing holding it with both thumbs and the right hand pointer. The rest of the fingers are used to hit the instrument.

Another permanent fixture in a Portugese orchestra is the Portuguese guitar. Known as guitarra portuguesa, this string instrument is plucked using 12 steel strings. It uses Preston tuners. Said to be patterned after the Arabic lute called Oud, the Portuguese guitar has two models, namely the Coimbra and the Lisboa models.

Other string instruments in a Portugese orchestra include the Viola Toeira, Viola de Arame, Cavaquinho, and the Braguesa.

Aerophones like the Gaita de Fores or bagpipe can also be found in a Portugese orchestra.
